Black Desert Online

MMORPG (akční) 2015 Pearl Abyss ⏱ Very long · 30+ h

A Korean MMORPG with an elaborate character editor and an action-oriented, mobility-based combat system.

Black Desert Online was released by South Korean studio Pearl Abyss in 2015 and immediately caught attention with its remarkably detailed graphics and in-depth character editor, which was among the most elaborate in the entire genre and allowed players to create a character with an almost unique appearance. Instead of a traditional combat system based on selecting abilities from a bar with cooldowns, the game offered action-oriented, movement-based combat reminiscent more of hack-and-slash titles, with an emphasis on dodging, fluid attack combinations, and precise timing - an approach not commonly seen in traditional MMORPGs of the time, which also attracted players who otherwise rejected classic MMOs because of their slow combat pace.

Besides combat, the game places great emphasis on extensive economic and life skills - fishing, cooking, alchemy, trading, and especially managing your own workers, who automatically gather resources on land owned by the player even while the player is offline. This elaborate economic and crafting system attracted an audience that prefers slow building and yield optimization over pure player-versus-player combat. The open world also offers extensive PvP elements, including territorial wars between guilds over fortresses, and seafaring with your own ships after the addition of maritime content.

Black Desert Online established itself primarily thanks to its audiovisual quality, which was among the best in the genre at the time of release, and it continues to be regularly updated with new content, classes, and regions of the game world. The game showed that an MMORPG can combine a demanding action combat component with a deep economic system without one significantly undermining the other, and it gained a stable international player base even outside its home Korean market, thanks in part to its own graphics engine, which Pearl Abyss gradually improved over subsequent years of operation.

Why play it: For players who want to combine demanding action combat with a deep economic system, in an MMORPG that is audiovisually among the best in the genre and is regularly expanded with new content and classes.
