Tactical war at sea: the hunt for the Bismarck and Atlantic convoys under two flags.

Atlantic Fleet is a turn-based and real-time tactical game focused on the surface naval battles of the Second World War in the Atlantic, where the fate of convoys supplying Britain was decided, in which the player commands a British or German fleet of battleships, cruisers, and destroyers and must exploit the strengths and weaknesses of each vessel type. The campaign follows key historical clashes, from the hunt for the Bismarck to long convoy battles in the harsh waters of the North Atlantic, forcing the player to decide on ship positioning, firing angles, and target priority before the gun battle itself even breaks out, one where how quickly the player can react to the enemy's opening salvos also matters.

Made by the same studio behind the later Cold Waters, the game builds on a clear yet honest model of ballistics and ship damage, where individual hits gradually knock out turrets, the rudder, or the engine room, changing the tactical situation as the battle progresses, so that even a badly damaged ship can still decide the outcome of an engagement. Clean 3D graphics with the option to watch the duel from various angles made every exchange of fire a visually legible and tense experience, even though the game aims more for accessibility than maximum simulation depth. The sound effects of the guns and the music accompanying the battles gave the games a dramatic tone matching the historical events they depict, whether it's the chase after a lone battleship or defending a convoy against overwhelming odds.

Atlantic Fleet was well received as an accessible yet honest alternative to larger, more demanding simulators, ideal for players who wanted to experience great battleship battles without having to master complex controls. It's still counted among the favorite titles for fans of Second World War surface naval warfare and serves as a good introduction to the subject before tackling more demanding simulators.

Why play it: For players who want to experience great battleship battles without mastering complex controls, ideal as an accessible introduction to Second World War surface naval warfare.
