A remaster of the 2005 colonial strategy game with a home-city card system.

Age of Empires III: Definitive Edition reworks the 2005 strategy game set in the era of the colonization of the New World, where European powers fight for influence in the Americas using firearms, artillery, and a home-city card system that allows players to send upgrades and units from the home city between matches. The player builds their economy on resource gathering, trade, and founding settlements, while military strength rests on a combination of firearm-wielding infantry and units of Native Americans.

Definitive Edition adds to the original game and its two expansions graphics redone for modern resolutions, a reworked interface, and unit balance that responds to years of community feedback. Crucially, however, the publisher gradually added to Definitive Edition, after release, entirely new civilizations that never existed in the original game or its expansions, including African and South Asian factions – making this the only version of Age of Empires III where these civilizations are playable at all. The game further offers modern online infrastructure and leaderboards that the 2005 original lacked.

An important part of the rework is also the home-city card system, which was rebalanced and expanded compared to the original to better match the modern understanding of competitive multiplayer, and the game continues to receive balance updates even years after release. Together with the new civilizations, this means that Age of Empires III: Definitive Edition today offers a substantially wider range of strategies and opponents than a player of the 2005 original or its two contemporary expansions had available.

Why play: Definitive Edition is the clear choice for anyone who wants to play Age of Empires III today, since it contains not only technical improvements but also content that never existed in the original game. It will be appreciated both by series veterans craving new civilizations and by newcomers looking for an accessible, graphically up-to-date colonial RTS with deep long-term army development.
