A remake of the foundational 1997 strategy game, one of the earliest origins of the RTS genre.

Age of Empires: Definitive Edition is a modern remake of the original 1997 strategy game, in which the player builds one of the historical civilizations from the ground up, gathers resources, founds villages, and advances through technological ages toward large armies and siege equipment. The core gameplay remains faithful to the original: careful economic planning is just as important as leading battles, and it was precisely this balance that years ago made Age of Empires one of the genre's foundational games.

Compared to the original, this is a complete graphical and technical overhaul. Definitive Edition offers redone unit and building models in high resolution, a reworked soundtrack performed by a live orchestra, and expanded campaigns supplemented with period historical inserts for individual campaigns. The game runs on a new engine adapted to modern systems, includes modern online multiplayer and leaderboards that the original from the nineties lacked, and was gradually supplemented with additional content and balance fixes in the following years. It is thus the only version among all Age of Empires releases that combines the original game design with a modern technical foundation.

The approach to civilization and unit balance also changed, as the developers adjusted it based on more than two decades of experience playing the original, so some tactics that dominated in 1997 work differently today. Definitive Edition also unifies the base game with its Rise of Rome expansion into a single package and offers a scenario editor for building custom maps and missions, making it the most complete available form of the series' first installment.

Why play: Definitive Edition is the best entry point for players who want to experience the roots of Age of Empires without having to deal with the original's dated graphics or missing online support. It will be appreciated both by nostalgics reminiscing about the nineties and by newcomers looking for an accessible, but honestly old-school, base-building RTS.
