King's Quest VII: The Princeless Bride

King's Quest VII: The Princeless Bride is a point-and-click adventure from Sierra released in 1994, the seventh instalment of the long-running fairy-tale King's Quest series. It differs from earlier entries mainly through its completely redesigned, hand-drawn graphics reminiscent of an animated film and its simplified controls, which dispense with the classic typed text commands of the older, harder games in the series. The story follows Queen Valanice and her daughter, Princess Rosella, who are forcibly separated and must travel through two parallel, seemingly unrelated fantasy worlds before they can finally be reunited.

The gameplay rests on classic adventure principles: exploring fairy-tale locations, collecting and combining items in the inventory, and solving puzzles that are often inspired by well-known fairy tales recast into the game's own fictional world. Compared with earlier entries, King's Quest VII is considerably more welcoming to newcomers thanks to its simple mouse controls, which made it a suitable entry point even for players who had so far been wary of adventures because of their complicated and confusing text parsers.

With its lavish, fairy-tale-flavoured graphics and generous orchestral soundtrack, the game was one of the most aesthetically impressive adventure releases of its time, although its hardware demands noticeably limited smoothness on the home computers of the day. The title is remembered as one of the last great flowerings of the classic Sierra adventure before the genre gradually gave way to more action-oriented, technologically demanding games built around three-dimensional graphics.
