Radiant Historia
Radiant Historia is a JRPG from Atlus that offered one of the most elaborate stories of its generation on the Nintendo DS. The player takes on the role of agent Stocke, who thanks to a mysterious book can travel between two parallel timelines and thereby change the course of history to prevent the world's impending destruction. This concept isn't merely a backdrop but a genuine game mechanic - decisions in one timeline affect the other, and the player must combine both branches to unlock new paths through the story as well as hidden endings. The narrative also allows returning to important points at any time and choosing a different branch, so the player gradually pieces together the entire mosaic of the world's past and future.
The battle system is built on a grid-based field, where enemies can be pushed and lined up so that attacks hit multiple targets at once or so that an enemy ends up in a disadvantageous position. This spatial tactic gives the otherwise turn-based battles unexpected depth and rewards players who plan ahead and combine the abilities of individual party members. The graphic design uses nicely drawn characters and clean environments, while the music can evoke both melancholic and urgent atmospheres depending on how the story develops, accompanying key emotional moments between characters as well.
Upon release the game received praise especially for its script and narrative structure, though it remained in the shadow of more popular series and eluded a wider audience. Over time, however, it built a reputation as one of the best-written RPGs on the DS and even inspired a later remaster on the Nintendo 3DS, which brought the game to more players. Today Radiant Historia is valued precisely for its courage to experiment with story structure in a way rarely seen in the genre, and for players interested in JRPGs it remains a must-play title that shows a handheld RPG can tell a timeless story.
