Bust-A-Move Universe
Bust-A-Move Universe is another sequel in the long-running puzzle series derived from the arcade game Puzzle Bobble, this time adapted for the Nintendo 3DS's stereoscopic 3D display. The basic principle remains unchanged — the player shoots colored bubbles from the bottom of the screen and tries to group them into trios and larger clusters to clear them before the pile of bubbles reaches their position. On the 3DS, the game uses the stereoscopic effect to make the pile of bubbles and the fired projectiles feel more three-dimensional, a noticeable, though not fundamental, difference in gameplay compared to the series' flat versions on older consoles.
Besides the classic game mode, the game offers a set of puzzle levels with fixed bubble arrangements and various multiplayer variants that use local wireless connection between consoles. The visual style remains colorful and inviting, in keeping with the series' long-standing identity, and thanks to the simplicity of its principle, the controls are easily accessible even to players with no experience of the genre. The musical accompaniment is cheerful and unobtrusive, typical of casual puzzle titles of the time, and complements the quick, at-first-glance undemanding gaming sessions well.
Bust-A-Move Universe didn't bring a fundamental revolution to the series' established formula, but as one of the early titles for the 3DS it showed that even simple puzzle concepts can benefit from stereoscopic display. For fans of the long-running brand, it was a reliable continuation that stuck to proven mechanics and offered exactly what players had come to expect from the series, without significant novelties beyond the technical side. The 3DS's portability also allowed for quick sessions anywhere on the go, matching the series' long-standing casual character focused on short gaming sessions. The brand's long history, dating back to the arcade Puzzle Bobble, also lent the game a mark of proven quality that players could rely on even without reading reviews.
