Hot Shots Golf
Hot Shots Golf, from Japanese studio Clap Hanz, debuted in 1997 on the original PlayStation as a light, arcade-style alternative to serious golf simulations like PGA Tour. Instead of realistic pros, it offered colourful, cartoonish characters and an accessible three-click swing system that governed power, timing, and accuracy, making the game easy to pick up even for players with no interest in real golf at all, while still offering enough depth for competitive play among more experienced, dedicated fans, thanks to wind, terrain, and lie all factoring into every single shot taken on the course.
The sequel, Hot Shots Golf 2, expanded the roster of characters and courses and cemented the series' place as friendly, family-oriented fun, while the handheld entry Open Tee on the PSP adapted the controls for a portable device and showed the concept worked well outside the living room. Over time the series added online matches, tournament modes, and new course types, but the core of quick, accessible swings stayed unchanged across generations of PlayStation hardware.
Outside Japan and North America, several entries were released under the different name Everybody's Golf, which occasionally confused players tracking the series across markets but had no bearing on the gameplay itself. Thanks to its low barrier to entry, humour, and approachability, Hot Shots Golf ranks among the titles that helped establish golf video games as entertainment for a broad audience, not just fans of the sport itself.
