One player against another, a grid full of walls and, in the middle of it all, a ticking bomb. The genre that Bomberman made famous is one of the best party entertainments in the history of games — and Bombic is its form on the TIC-80 fantasy console. All you need is a few friends, one screen and the chaos can begin.
TIC-80 is an open-source fantasy console, a relative of the more popular PICO-8, which offers programmers the same philosophy: deliberate limitations that force inventiveness. Tiny resolution, a limited palette and compact code create an environment where exactly such games as an action party arcade thrive. No wonder — bomberman-like titles never needed anything more than a clear grid and immediately legible rules.
The principle is ingeniously simple. You move through a maze, place bombs whose explosions destroy walls and opponents, and try to survive longer than the others. In the meantime you collect upgrades that increase the range of the explosions or the number of bombs, and the playing field gradually turns into a deadly trap. The magic lies in the tension between attack and escape — placing a bomb at the right moment means victory, a second too late means your own doom. And in multiplayer the best kind of friendly chaos is born.
Culturally, bomberman-like games represent the archetype of local multiplayer, that unfortunately now receding joy of the shared couch. The community around TIC-80 keeps this tradition alive and proves that you do not need online servers or photorealistic graphics for good fun — a few controllers and the urge to blow each other up are enough. It is a pure, timeless mechanic.
Because Bombic is a community homebrew work, I do not have verified information about its author, year of release or any achievements, and so I do not state them. What is certain, however, is that it is a title built on a tried-and-true and always functional principle, available thanks to the open nature of TIC-80. If you are looking for a game you will laugh at with friends, here it is.
Why play: A bomberman-like party arcade on TIC-80, built on the immortal mechanic of placing bombs — ideal fuel for chaotic evenings with friends around one screen.
