ASCII Game

Roguelike ⏱ Short · up to ~3 h

A roguelike in pure text graphics — a return to the roots of the genre inspired by Rogue.

A screen full of letters, digits and symbols, where every character hides an enemy, a treasure or death. ASCII Game is a roguelike for TIC-80 that proudly claims the purest form of the genre — the one in which text characters make up the graphics and the player's imagination does the rest. It's a return to roots that reach all the way back to the legendary Rogue from the turn of the seventies and eighties.

The roguelike stands on several firm pillars, and ASCII Game serves them without compromise: procedurally generated levels, so no two expeditions are the same, and permanent death, which lends weight to every decision. When you fall, it's over — no loading right before the mistake. This cruelty is precisely what makes the genre one great school of caution and planning, where even a step into a side corridor can be fatal.

The choice of ASCII aesthetics is not a whim but a creed. Text graphics are an abstract language the player must read and interpret — a letter means an enemy, a symbol means an item — and it's precisely this mental work that is part of the experience. TIC-80 as an economical fantasy console suits this conception ideally: on minimal resources it builds a game that plays out mainly in the head.

Culturally, ASCII Game is a tribute to the whole tradition from which games like NetHack, Angband or modern takes on the genre grew. The roguelike had enormous influence — its principles (random generation, permadeath) today seep into countless titles across platforms. ASCII Game doesn't water these principles down; on the contrary, it returns them to their original, harshest form.

For the player this means a challenge, not a stroll. You will die, learn and come back, because every new expedition offers a different layout of danger. It's a game for someone who isn't looking for spectacle but for depth — and who knows that the best graphics are the ones you imagine yourself.

Why play: If you love hard, thoroughbred roguelikes with procedural dungeons and permadeath, ASCII Game returns you to the roots of the genre in its most honest textual form.
